LECTURE: Where The Night-Children Dwell: Vampires in South-Eastern European Herbal Magic
The Balkans, and by extension, the rest of South-Eastern Europe, have long been the subject of great scholarly attention with respect to their tenacious and rich vampiric lore. From the very word “vampire” itself arising out of the South Slavic language group, to the countless folkloric motifs from this region that have become disseminated throughout modern popular culture, South-Eastern Europe is not only responsible for the bulk of our understandings of European vampires; it also remains to this day an unbroken inheritor of their beliefs, customs, and protective measures.

Drawing on anthropological scholarship, oral lore obtained through ethnographic research (as well as a lifelong personal study of Balkan folk traditions), and never-before-translated praxis, this presentation will introduce a collection of South-Eastern European vampire typologies, as well as the trees and plants that draw and repel them. In addition to providing profiles on specific herbs, their methods of harvest, and the folkloric reasons why they are either empower or harm the children of the night, this presentation will also cover specific rituals, divinations, and methods of capture and subterfuge with the aid of green allies—both to destroy these night-bound adversaries, or perhaps even, as witches, to engage their very hunger for our redness in sorcery.
